July - CSA Box #4

Summer is in full swing and we are grateful for the little amount of rain we have seen. The fact that we are able to pull produce that is anything close to the quality of a grocery store is pretty amazing in these conditions. Many of the spring crops we intended to have finished earlier are just being pulled, but they still look great. As things are harvested, space is opening up for the planting of cold-weather crops that will be ready this fall. It is a great time to see the garden; things are really starting to take off.

  • Basil - Lettuce Leaf, Cinnamon, Nexus

    • We are personally most excited about the Lettuce Leaf variety as we have never seen anything quite like it. We’ve heard that cinnamon has been highly anticipated by some and we look forward to providing a wide variety of these in the future. Let us know how you end up using these as we will be seed-saving and growing these in various quantities based on your feedback and levels of admiration.

  • Mint - We are pleased to share some more of the common mint in this box. A large section of it has gone to flower and has been attracting a host of buzzing pollinators.

  • Cilantro - This shot up in our hoop house faster than expected but we are more than happy to share the wealth.

  • Gourmet Lettuce Mix - a triumphant return! It looks amazing and we have proved the critics wrong by growing a successful lettuce crop in the heat of summer yet again. This is the first flush of this recently planted bed, therefore it is incredibly tender and choice. Eat it up quickly, while it is at its freshest!

  • Garlic - German Extra Hardy

    • These are almost done curing. Smaller than the Music Garlic, these have beautiful purple-striped skin. We will be sharing garlic with you for the rest of the year as our harvest was hefty!

  • Cabbage - Red Express

    • These have been growing since February and just started forming denser heads recently. They were chewed to the ground by vermin early in the year, but low and behold they bounced back and finished strong.

  • Cauliflower - Bermeo

    • We really hope you won’t judge a book by its cover here. This cauliflower may not look as flawless as the ones in the store, but it is fresh, nutrient-dense, and survived despite an onslaught of pests and less-than-ideal growing conditions. Overall we are very happy with the outcome and hope you will cook these up. If not, feel free to chop them up, freeze them, and send them back to us on the next CSA delivery date. Expect some different varieties later in the season that hopefully will have little to no blemishes.

  • Beets - Golden

    • If you didn’t take a chance on the other beet suggestions we gave you, DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS ONE! This beet poke recipe is by far one of our favorites and a staple in our home. Golden beets won’t dye everything under the sun (like their red sisters) so they make for a pretty dish that’s healthy too.

      • Beet Poke from ‘Fuck that’s Delicious’ by Action Bronson

  • Cucumbers - Suyo

    • We’ve been growing this variety for over a decade on the farm and seed-saving to produce these fan favorites. Spikey on the outside but crisp and relatively seedless on the inside, they make a great Szechuan salad or accompaniment to salmon and rice.

  • Onions - Gladstone

    • These white onions are best kept refrigerated as they are not cured.

  • Summer Squash - We ran into some pest issues that are slowing things down with our zucchini crop. We had just enough to go around this time but hope to have that fixed very soon.

    • Zucchini - Black Beauty, Nimba, Golden

    • Bennings Green Tint Patty Pan

  • Tomatoes & Strawberries - Not all of you received tomatoes this time around. The ground squirrels have been feasting on these pretty regularly so we had to pick some prematurely. Both should ripen up if left in the sun for a day or so. Happy to see our strawberries are producing again and hope to have more of these next time around as well!

  • Cippolini Onion

  • Chantenay Carrots

  • Curly Kale

  • Russian Fingerling Potatoes - How?!? Oh, How! Could we forget about the potatoes!?! These were the first variety we pulled and were naturally very excited to see how these did.
